AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave, it is a standard audio/video file format for Windows. Since the AVI file is simply a wrapper, the audio/video content contained within it can be compressed with various codecs, such as DivX codec, Indeo codec or MPEG2. If your Windows Media Player can't play an avi file, you need to check whether your system have the required codecs installed.
